Dr. Tonya Y. Moore, director of athletics at Gordon State College was named as the Chief of Staff for the Office of the President effective June 15, 2022.

Moore has over 20 years of management experience and has served within higher education since 2006. She has dedicated over 13 years at GSC and recently served as the director of career services. At GSC, Moore served in multiple capacities including director of the GSC at Fort Valley State University program, adjunct faculty for business and public service, professional academic advisor, and she has established necessary policies, procedures and practices as the coordinator for the Adult Forward campaign. In addition, Moore served as the student ambassador campus advisor and GSC Toastmasters club advisor both of which she has chartered.

“I am very humbled and honored to serve our college in this capacity. I have seen our institution grow in so many ways over the years. As a legacy leader, I am looking forward to partnering with my colleagues in building an education ecosystem that we will all be proud of decades from now,” Moore said.

Currently, Moore serves as the state college director and past chair for the USC-CACE Board for the University System of Georgia (USG), as well as the USG RACCES-Community Engagement and Service Learning Board. She also serves as the past president for The Georgia Career Consortium and the Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers. More so, Moore assists with keeping GSC connected in the community by serving as an executive board member for the Lamar County Family Connections Collaborative and is a board of trustee member of the Tubman Museum in Macon, Georgia. 

In her new role as chief of staff, Moore will provide oversight, strategic direction and daily leadership for the president’s office operations and athletics, as well as work closely with USG on legislative and economic development matters. A main focus for Moore will be developing purposeful community and legislative partnerships.

“I believe in our mission to support students’ academic success and personal development through active engagement, dynamic collaboration, and transformative experiences and will continue to be a purposeful contributor wherever I am needed to ensure this happens with excellency in mind!” Moore said.

A Michigan native, Moore earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in management from Tennessee State University in May of 1993; she earned her Master of Business Administration from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky in May of 1999; in December of 2017, she earned her Master of Science in mental health counseling from Fort Valley State University in Georgia; and she holds her Doctor of Philosophy in human capital development from The University of Southern Mississippi which she earned in December of 2018.

Moore’s honors and awards include being selected for the 2015 Leadership Lamar Class in Barnesville, Georgia and her Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) certification in academic and career counseling. She has also received the 2016 Georgia Association of Colleges and Employees Research Scholarship award. In 2019, Moore was selected to participate in the Executive Leadership Institute within USG and is currently in the 2022 class of Leadership Macon.
