GSC Baseball Stays Hot, Sweeps USC-Salkehatchie

ALLENDALE, S.C. – Gordon State Baseball climbed a game above .500 overall heading into conference play later this weekend with a 9-0, 15-2 sweep of the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie here Wednesday afternoon.

GSC (9-8 overall), which has won seven of its last nine, broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth with two runs and added three more in the fifth and four in the seventh to seal the shutout victory.

Eight players had at least one hit with Ethan Scott (Augusta, Ga. / Aquinas HS) leading the way with three while Jamel Rookard (Winston, Ga. / Chapel Hill HS) and Cole Phillips (Trion, Ga. / Trion HS) had two each.

Phillips also had four RBI while Rookard had two for the Highlanders.

Trey Felt (Lawrenceville, Ga. / Prince Avenue Christian) went six innings on the mound and didn't allow a run while giving up just three hits, struck out 10 and no walks.

GSC was also in control of the second game as the Highlanders score three runs in the first inning, four in the third, six in the fourth and two in the fifth to complete the five-inning, 13-run win.

Cole Stanford (Ellerslie, Ga. / Harris Co. HS) had three hits – including two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored – while Carson Renz (Dacula, Ga. / Mill Creek HS) had two hits and two runs scored for the Highlanders.

Clayton Weaver (Columbus, Ga. / Northside HS) had a hit, run scored, two RBI and two walks on the afternoon and Nate Shipley (Marietta, Ga. / Pope HS) connected for a homer.

Joey Gill (Canton, Ga. / Creekview HS) went all five innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out five and walking two.
