GSC Splits Pair With East Georgia

BARNESVILLE, Ga. – Gordon State took the opener of its doubleheader with East Georgia State in convincing fashion with a 16-7 win, but dropped the nightcap 11-8 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) action here Tuesday.

GSC scored in every inning except the second and seventh en route to the nine-run victory in the first game.

Three runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to go along with a game-clinching five-run eighth proved to be the difference.

GSC pounded out 22 hits, including four from Cole Stanford (Ellerslie, Ga. / Harris Co. HS) and three each from Sam Kuchinski (Powder Springs, Ga. / Harrison HS), Ethan Scott (Augusta, Ga. / Aquinas HS) and Cole Phillips (Trion, Ga. / Trion HS).

Scott and Phillips also homered and drove in four runs each on the afternoon.

In the second game, GSC jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings, but watched it quickly slip away as East Georgia State scored six runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take an 11-8 advantage and finished off the victory by holding the Highlanders' bats quiet the rest of the way.

GSC (26-17 overall, 15-9 GCAA) managed just five hits with Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier HS) with two of those for the Highlanders.

Phillips connected for a grand slam to up his home run total to 13 and RBI count to 52 in 41 games.

GSC and East Georgia State (25-18, 10-12) meet again Friday in Swainsboro.
