GSC Softball Rebounds For Sweep of USC-Salkehatchie

BARNESVILLE, Ga. – Gordon State got back on the winning track after a tough weekend in Columbus as the Highlanders swept the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie 10-4 and 8-0 in five innings here Wednesday afternoon.

GSC (9-8) struck for six runs in the bottom of the first inning after USC-Salkehatchie had plated a pair of runs in the top half.

GSC then added four runs in the bottom of the third to eventually pull away for the six-run victory.

Hailey Hooper (Monticello, Ga. / Piedmont Academy) had three hits to lead the way for GSC, including a home run and three RBI.

Claire Williams (Conyers, Ga. / Heritage HS) added two hits, including a homer, and also drove in three runs for the Highlanders.

Kinsey Jones (Aragon, Ga. / Rockmart HS) and Breanna Lee (Concord, Ga. / Pike Co. HS) each had two hits – both doubles for Lee – in the 14-hit attack.

GSC finished off the sweep – its second in the past seven days – with another six-run inning, which came in the second inning that was sandwiched by single runs in the first and third.

Catherine Barefield's (Cataula, Ga. / Harris Co. HS) grand slam was the big hit for the Highlanders that capped off a two-hit, five-RBI day.

Taylor McClendon (McDonough, Ga. / Ola HS) and Camden Steele (Jackson, Ga. / Union Grove HS) also had two hits while Jones connected for the second GSC home run of the game.

Bailey Odom (Danville, Ga. / Bleckley Co. HS) got the win in the circle with five innings of shutout pitching, allowing just two hits, strking out four and walking none.
