Decatur, GA - Gordon State Soccer opened the 2021 season by travelling to Agnes Scott College Saturday morning. The Highlanders didn't let the unusual kickoff time of 8:00 am unnerve them in route to a 4-0 victory.

From the opening whistle GSC took the initiative, pressing towards the Scottie's goal. The first goal of the season came in the 6th minute when sophomore Madison Schmucker's (Cape Coral, FL/ Ida S. Baker) shot caromed off a defender into the path of sophomore Lourdes Tompkins (Stephens, GA/ Oglethorpe County) who found the back of the net.

Seventeen minutes later, Tomkins doubled the Highlanders lead when she pounced on a rebound after Schmucker's shot hit the goalpost.

As Gordon State continued to push forward, sophomore Gabriela Arellano (Miami, FL/  John A. Ferguson) chipped a ball over the defensive line into the path of freshman Kira Goodwin (Middleburg, FL/ Oakleaf) who coolly placed the ball into the side-netting.

The final goal of the match came in the 36th minute when Goodwin turned provider as she set up freshman Alana Dove (Winston, GA/ Alexander).

A steady defensive effort by the Highlanders helped sophomore Mallory McCarthney (Griffin, GA/ Spalding) and freshman Cassidy Abbott (Senoia,GA/ East Coweta) combine for the shutout.

Gordon State will travel to Americus, GA Tuesday, August 24 to take on Georgia Southwestern State University at 7:00 pm.
