Douglas, GA - Gordon State Soccer travelled Saturday afternoon for a rematch of last season's Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association final. While a trophy was not on the line this time, the two rivals waged an intense battle.

The Hawks best opportunity to score came in the first half when Lissette Sanchez broke behind the Highlanders defense and fired from the penalty spot only to be denied by sophomore goalkeeper Mallory McCarthney (Griffin, GA/ Spalding) who tipped the ball over the crossbar.

The Highlanders best opportunity came in the second half when freshman Adriana Duque (Davie, FL/ Archbishop McCarthy) drove a free kick into the penalty area that deflected off of a Hawk defender allowing sophomore Madison Schmucker (Cape Coral, FL/ Ida S. Baker) to poke the ball towards the goal where the SGSC goalkeeper saved it.

Both sides created numerous chances; however, the ninety minutes of regulation ended with the teams tied at zero.

The sides battled for an additional twenty minutes of overtime; however, neither was able to find the winner.

With the clean sheet Gordon State has shut out four of their five opponents on the season. The tie brings the Highlanders GCAA record to 1-0-1 with an overall record of 3-1-1.

GSC will host a pair of non-region matches this coming week. Wednesday Sept. 22 the Highlanders will welcome Oxford College of Emory University at 7:00. Twenty-four hours later they will take on the reserve team from Middle Georgia State University.
