Highlanders Cruise Past ABAC

Barnesville, GA - Gordon State Soccer returned to action after a ten-day break with an emphatic 8-0 victory over the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Fillies Friday night. GSC spread the wealth as eight different Highlanders scored goals.

Gordon State set the tone from the outset when just 40 seconds into the match sophomore Gabriela Arellano (Miami, FL/ John A. Ferguson) intercepted a Fillies goal kick and found freshman Gabby Cruzado (Cumming, GA/ Forsyth Central) who drove the opening goal past the keeper.

Eighteen minutes later sophomore Emma Lovell (Tavernier, FL/ Coral Shores) doubled the Highlanders lead when she pounced on a rebound created by sophomore Sara Schultz's (Villa Rica, GA/ Alexander) shot off of the crossbar.

In the 35th minute freshman Chelsie Moore (Williamson, GA/ Pike County) began a passing sequence in which four Highlanders covered the length of the field and culminated with freshman Kira Goodwin (Middleburg, FL/ Oakleaf) crossing the ball to fellow freshman Emily Romero (Acworth, GA/ Harrison) for the third goal of the night.

Just two minutes before halftime the Highlanders increased the lead to four when freshman Ellie Rohrbach (Hahira, GA/ Lowndes) sent a ball to the middle of the penalty area that sophomore Lourdes Tompkins (Stephens, GA/ Oglethorpe County) calmly slid past the keeper.

During the second half the Highlanders matched their scoring output from the first half with an additional four goals. The first came in the 53rd minute when Schultz collected her second assist, this time to sophomore Madison Schmucker (Cape Coral, FL/ Ida S Baker).

Ten minutes later sophomore Sophia Kotopka (Riverview, FL/ East Bay) drove a ball low from a corner kick that freshman Alana Dove (Winston, GA/ Alexander) flicked to the far-side netting.

In the 76th minute freshman Adriana Duque (Davie, FL/ Archbishop McCarthy) stole the ball in midfield and fired the 7th goal on the night.

The final goal came courtesy of sophomore Molly Worst (Brooks, GA/ Whitewater) who collected a ball from Dove and lofted it over the top of the Fillies goalkeeper.

The victory elevates the Highlanders Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association' s record to 2-1-1 with an overall record of 5-2-2. GSC has a quick turnaround as they host Polk State College Saturday Oct. 9 at 12:00 pm. The match will be played at Wyomia Tyus Park in Griffin, GA.
