FIVE HIGHLANDER PLAYERS NAMED ON ALL-REGION TEAMS

Five Gordon State College soccer players were named to the GCAA Women's All-Region soccer teams and will be honored this Friday at the annual Highlander soccer banquet.

Sophomores Brooke Shavers (GK), Isabelle Vazquez (defender), and Alex Chapman (forward), along with freshman Ashley Hendrix (midfielder) were named to the first team while sophomore Brittany Colangelo (defender) claimed her spot on the second team.

Brooke Shavers proved invaluable to the Highlanders as she led the region in shots saved at 87.5% with 98 saves while recording 12 shutouts.

Isabelle Vazquez started 18 out of 19 games played in her sophomore year. She captained the conference's stingiest defense en route to an undefeated region record. Vazquez also formidably supported the offense, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

Alex Chapman's relentless offensive pressure enabled her to lead the region with 78 shots on goal while finishing second in the region with 13 goals, four of which were game winning goals.

Ashley Hendrix served as the Highlanders go-to player while leading from a multitude of positions. Her pace and energy constantly threatened opposing defenses as she amassed eight goals and two assists.

Brittany Colangelo, an attacking wingback terrorized opponents while attacking and defending throughout the season. Her stellar work on the back line was complimented by her six goals and five assists.

"We are proud of the accomplishments of this team both on and off the field. We are excited by the recognition that these five young ladies have earned and feel that each member of this team should be honored," said Coach Scott Henderson.
