Highlander Soccer Opens Season With Win

Americus, GA – Gordon State women's soccer (1-0-0) defeated Georgia Southwestern University (0-0-0) 1-0 in its season opener on Thursday night at the GSW soccer field, with sophomore Brittany Colangelo's goal in the tenth minute of the second half. The victory extends the Highlanders opening day wins for a fifth season, a streak dating back to the 2015 season.

"This was a nice win for us against a four year soccer program," said head coach Scott Henderson after the victory. "We would have liked to play a little better, but watching us pull through and win was a great way to start off the season."

The Hurricanes of GSW controlled the game early and put freshman goalkeeper Becca Doyle's goal under heavy pressure. Doyle earned her first collegiate start as well as her first shutout.

The breakthrough came in the 55th minute after the Highlanders had a good spell of possession in the Canes half. Freshman Gaby Arellano slipped Brittany Colangelo in behind the Canes' defensive line. Colangelo broke free and opened the Highlanders scoring for the season.

The Canes pressed for the equalizer and forced a series of corner kicks; a total of nine for the game. Brave defending and a timely hydration break saw the Highlanders survive the sustained pressure. Following the break, the Highlanders controlled most of the play for the final 20 minutes. Freshman Jennifer Baharie took control of the midfield while freshman Autume Maxwell shut down any Cane attacks.

The Highlanders will kick off conference play at Andrew College on Sunday, August 25 starting at 2:30 pm.
