Brittany Colangelo breaks forward in a Highlander attack

Barnesville, GA - Gordon State soccer returned home Tuesday in fine form defeating the Fillies of ABAC 7-0. The victory was a comprehensive one in which seven different Highlanders scored goals for the team. Just as impressively, Gordon State did not allow a single shot to be taken by the Fillies.

Throughout the match Gordon State played in complete control. The Highlanders combined their high pressure defense with a patient passing attack that broke the Fillies down. The scoring began in the 9th minute when sophomore Kennedy McNab sent a cross from the right side of the field to the back post where sophomore Alex Chapman delivered the opening goal. Just eight minutes later, McNab would double the Highlanders lead with a looping shot from the right side of the field that dropped over the outstretched arms of the goal keeper. With those two scores the Highlanders led 2-0 at the break.

The second half continued in the same fashion as the first. The Highlanders maintained their pressure and repeatedly broke the Fillies down and the goals began to pile up. Freshmen Hailey Hadsell and Jersie Stephens scored in quick succession in the 66th and 67th minutes to push the score to 4-0. In a similar fashion, freshman Jasmine O'Hara and sophomore Izzy Vazquez scored in the 80th and 81st minutes to increase the Highlanders lead to 6-0. Finally, freshman Jennifer Beharie capped off the scoring in the 88th minute to close out the Highlanders 7-0 victory.

This victory allowed the Highlanders to remain a perfect 6-0 at home this season. Additionally, it pushed Gordon State's overall record to 10-1-2 with a Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Region 17 record of 7-0-2. The first place Highlanders will leave conference play for a pair of matches in Birmingham this coming weekend. Gordon State will play Holmes Community College Friday, Oct. 11 at 2:00 PM CDT then play Jones County Junior College Saturday, Oct. 12 at 4:00 PM CDT.
